One of the most challenging jumps in figure skating is the quadruple Axel (4A).
It's considered the holy grail of jumps for a few reasons:
Forward Takeoff: Unlike other quads that take off backward, the Axel jump starts forward, requiring 4.5 rotations in the air to land cleanly.
Technical Complexity: That extra half rotation makes it harder to complete and land, requiring immense strength, timing, and airtime.
Risk Factor: Attempting a 4A is extremely risky—falls or under-rotations can result in serious injury or a huge points deduction.
Very few skaters have even attempted it in competition, and Ilia Malinin made history in 2022 as the first skater to land a clean 4A in competition.
