Mistake in jumps: Poor Preparation

What’s the Problem?
Preparation is the foundation of every jump. Incorrect posture, blade positioning, or edge control can lead to instability and inefficient take-off.
Why It Happens
Each skater’s body type, flexibility, and coordination are unique, so there’s no universal “perfect” preparation. Without a tailored approach, preparation can feel forced and ineffective.
How to Fix It
Improving preparation requires both technical and individualized adjustments:
Alignment Focus: Ensure the head, shoulders, hips, and skating foot are correctly aligned.
Step-by-Step Practice: Break down the preparation phase into smaller movements. Master each one before combining them.
Tailored Exercises: Customize drills to suit the skater’s physical strengths and needs.
Examples of Specific Jumps
Axel: Master the transition from backward to forward motion by focusing on smooth weight shifts.
Salchow/Flip: Perfect the Mohawk (C-step) or 3-turn to create a stable entry.
Toe Loop: Focus on clean foot transitions and weight shifts for better precision.
Loop: Keep the skating leg in optimal position without overextending.
Lutz: Pay attention to the counter-rotational trajectory to differentiate it from the Flip.
